About N. S. Freda Auyeung, M.D., M.P.H.
Growing up in Hong Kong and Thailand prior to continuing my education in the US, I have been acutely aware of the impact that differential health system resources and utilization has on healthcare disparities. As a passionate advocate for children’s global health, my journey toward pediatric hospital medicine has been shaped by a deep commitment to healthcare access and equity. My academic and professional experiences reinforced my belief that every child, regardless of their background, should have access to evidence-based healthcare and that all families should have the opportunity to partner with their care providers to appropriately address their needs. I am particularly interested in how pediatric hospital medicine can serve as a platform to bridge these gaps, ensuring that all children receive high-quality, evidence-based, collaborative care, whether they are medically complex requiring coordination of care; otherwise, healthy but hospitalized for routine pediatric concerns; or healthy newborns in the nursery. As an educator involved in training the next generation of pediatricians, I hope to challenge and inspire them to think of the larger systemic barriers they can overcome to improve their ability to advocate for and deliver high-quality care to their patients.
Dr. N.S. Freda Auyeung is the Medical Director of the newborn nurseries at Alexander Cohen Hospital and Lower Manhattan Hospital, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, and Assistant Attending Pediatrician/Hospitalist at New York Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital. She is board certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine.
Dr. Auyeung completed her undergraduate work at Emory University in 2007 with double majors in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology as well as Music - Piano Performance. She received her Masters in Public Health (M.P.H.) degree at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2011 and medical degree (M.D.) at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2013. She subsequently completed her residency in Pediatrics at Cohen Children's Medical Center - Northwell Health in 2016, fulfilling requirements for the Pediatric Global Health track with her work in Kenya. After residency, she worked for one year at Lower Manhattan Hospital - NYP Cornell before moving on to serve as a Pediatric Hospitalist and Clinical Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at NYU Langone - Hassenfeld Children's Hospital for 7 years. There, she served in a multitude of leadership roles. She worked to establish a nursery-based APP program as Pediatric Co-Director of the Mother-Baby PA program and also served as Interim Associate Medical Director of Well Newborn Care. As a Director for Pediatric Global Health, she mentored and facilitated the Pediatric Residency Global Health pathway and helped to establish connections in pediatrics through the AMPATH Ghana program. Finally as Medical Director of the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital Pre-Operative Clinic, she worked to standardize protocols for pre-operative clearance and optimization of medically complex children. This work transitioned to creating workflows across pediatric surgical subspecialties and moving towards the creation of a unified Pediatric Pre-operative Optimization Program.
